It&#8217;s unsourced, unexplained and distilled advice. For example &#8220;Do not be the starving artist, working on things that have great personal value to you, but little market value.\u00a0Follow the money. It tells you where you\u2019re most valuable.&#8221;\u00a0I hope this type of list becomes a trend. It&#8217;s what inspired me to post <a href=\"http:\/\/marcusvorwaller.com\/blog\/2016\/02\/14\/an-aspirational-list-on-how-to-live\/\"><span class=\"s3\">my list of values<\/span><\/a> and he links to <a href=\"http:\/\/livingongigging.com\/do-this-instead\/\"><span class=\"s2\">this list by Cheryl Engelhardt of her directives<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How can you review a rap album so exclusive almost no one will ever hear it? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dancohen.org\/2016\/01\/04\/for-what-its-worth-a-review-of-the-wu-tang-clans-once-upon-a-time-in-shaolin\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Dan Cohen has a fascinating take<\/span><\/a> on Wu-Tang Clan&#8217;s &#8220;Once Upon a Time in Shaolin&#8221; and, more generally, on the mystery and beauty of the secret and ephemeral. Paper after paper is being retracted after results can&#8217;t be reproduced. <a href=\"http:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/failure-is-moving-science-forward\/\"><span class=\"s2\">FiveThirtyEight writes<\/span><\/a> about how this might actually be moving science forward. Andrew Gelman, a statistician at Columbia University, is more pessimistic and says it&#8217;s time to basically declare bankruptcy; that <a href=\"http:\/\/andrewgelman.com\/2016\/02\/22\/its-too-hard-to-publish-criticisms-and-obtain-data-for-replication\/\"><span class=\"s2\">&#8220;Everything published before 2016 is provisional.&#8221;<\/span><\/a>\u00a0It&#8217;s a big, embarrassing problem that&#8217;s not going away any time soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I recently read <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1qENHLp\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>Magicians of the Gods<\/i><\/span><\/a><i>\u00a0<\/i>by journalist and amateur-of-many-years archeologist Graham Hancock. He proposes the existence of a civilization with advanced science and agriculture that existed before 9200 BC. He theorizes that this civilization was destroyed, but managed to pass along some of its knowledge via messengers or &#8220;magicians,&#8221; to help jump-start future civilizations. His work is controversial but mostly level-headed and, without a doubt, very interesting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/slatestarcodex.com\/\">Slate Star Codex<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> is one of those sites where you can lose yourself for hours in a fantastic rabbit hole of everythingness. Not to be missed. The author, Scott Alexander, is also writing a serial novel called\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s4\"><i>Unsung<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>. <\/i>It&#8217;s about what happens after an Apollo rocket crashes in to the ceiling of space and cracks it open. It&#8217;s first-rate science fiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s5\">A couple IQ related links:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/02\/08\/europe\/iq-test-dogs-british-scientists\/\"><span class=\"s6\">Dogs have their own test now<\/span><\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3044837\/\"><span class=\"s6\">Tall people are more likely to have a higher IQ<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/12\/science\/ligo-gravitational-waves-black-holes-einstein.html\"><span class=\"s2\">recent confirmation of their existence by LIGO<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/report\/the-discovery-of-gravitational-waves\/\"><span class=\"s2\">gravitational waves<\/span><\/a> are back in the news. I&#8217;m looking forward to reading <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1Xo0vA7\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>Black Hole Blues<\/i><\/span><\/a> to understand the significance of the discovery a bit more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It had been awhile since I read Roald Dahl. I read <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1S9C4rU\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>Charlie and the Chocolate Factory<\/i><\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1YgJ70w\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator<\/i><\/span><\/a> to my son and rediscovered how refreshing his writing and how bizarre his plots are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I&#8217;ve been reading, and really enjoying, <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1Wj30XB\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>Altruism<\/i><\/span><\/a> by Matthieu Ricard. It&#8217;s a good answer to proponents of selfishness ranging from <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1NnEVvm\"><span class=\"s2\">Dawkins<\/span><\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1SZk3rn\"><span class=\"s2\">Ayn Rand<\/span><\/a>. And, as with most things, the Internet has taken <a href=\"http:\/\/rationalwiki.org\/wiki\/Effective_altruism\"><span class=\"s2\">altruism and made it weird<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At work we&#8217;ve had a lively discussion of the guaranteed minimum income. It&#8217;s an idea that has been loved and hated by people on all points of the political spectrum. Some think it could bring about another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bridalfeel.com\/wedding-dresses\/destination\"><span class=\"s2\">creative<\/span><\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2015\/03\/welfare-makes-america-more-entrepreneurial\/388598\/\"><span class=\"s2\">entrepreneurial<\/span><\/a> renaissance. The idea has been seriously explored in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2015\/02\/08\/worstall_i_support_the_green_party_natalie_bennett_minimum_basic_income\/\"><span class=\"s2\">UK<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/are-canadians-worth-20k-a-year-guaranteed-1.1891794\"><span class=\"s2\">Canada<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/bb\/swiss-consider-welfare-overhaul-guaranteed-minimum-income\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Switzerland<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/igps.victoria.ac.nz\/WelfareWorkingGroup\/Downloads\/Working%20papers\/Treasury-A-Guaranteed-Minimum-Income-for-New-Zealand%20.PDF\"><span class=\"s2\">New Zealand<\/span><\/a> and now in the <a href=\"http:\/\/mic.com\/articles\/125309\/basic-income-advocates-organize-in-washington-dc-to-storm-the-2016-election#.e06Z0qbZd\"><span class=\"s2\">USA<\/span><\/a>.
